2010 Local Election Candidates
Ashtead Common Ward – LEN WOOD
PUT ASHTEAD FIRST:
I first came to Ashtead in 1950 and live in the heart of Ashtead Common Ward, on the north side of the railway line.
I have been active in Ashtead for years, and am keen to use my enthusiasm and experience to help as a councillor. I am a helper for Ashtead Good Neighbours, a Governor of West Ashtead School, a member of Transition Ashtead and a Trustee of the Ashtead Recreation Campaign. I am also a member of the Rotary Club of Ashtead and help to run the Ashtead Village Day.
With your support I will be an active Councillor for Common Ward and will be a strong voice to stand up for Ashtead and all who live here. I am very keen to improve the station car park and secure a second, emergency crossing over the railway, and know that many residents are very upset that the sitting Independent councillor appears to prefer widening Woodfield Lane instead, and that in any event after years of representing our area he has secured no improvement at all!
If you have any questions, or are able to help me in my campaign to be a really active local councillor, do please contact me. Thank you.

Ashtead Park Ward – HOWARD JONES
A STRONG VOICE FOR ASHTEAD:
I am sorry that Cllr Bryan Davis is standing down at this election as your Conservative Councillor in Park Ward, but delighted to have been chosen to stand as his replacement.
It is my belief that we face major political and economic problems as a nation at all levels. The need for smaller government…an end to some of the very high public sector salaries, a reduction in box ticking…the list goes on.
All of these issues reverberate through Government, Quangos, County Councils and District Councils. It is to Conservatives at all levels that the country needs to look to solve these problems. Mole Valley is Conservative controlled with a narrow majority. In the face of strong opposition, Conservatives have frozen the Council tax. Voting Independent this year in the District election will clearly mean the Conservatives will loose overall control and we will then risk having a Lib Dem-run council. Even if the Independents got a seat or two on the Executive, the Lib Dems would pack it to ensure they won any votes! To protect Ashtead and keep the Lib Dems at bay we need a Conservative Council and that means voting Conservative, especially in Park Ward where the risk of losing the seat is real.
My aim if elected is to robustly represent the people of Ashtead. I have a particular interest in local policing issues, schools, and in the provision of sporting facilities. I will also monitor the use of funds paid by developers (the so-called s106 monies) to ensure that they are spent locally.
If you have any questions or are able to help me in my campaign to be an active councillor for you, please contact me. Thank you.

Ashtead Village Ward – SYLVIA SHARLAND
A RECORD OF ACTION – A PROMISE OF MORE:
Ashtead Village Ward residents elected me four years ago and I hope I have served you well. I have kept my promise to care, conserve and consult and been tireless in standing up for Ashtead and local residents. From planning to housing issues, I have always tried my best and worked with my colleague Ward councillors to ensure that our Village is treated as special.
I am proud to be a member of the Conservative Administration – it allows Ashtead to be at the very top table and for our work to be successful. I played a key party in the process which led to the council tax freeze – work which quite simply the Ashtead Independent Party took no part in.
Planning applications often arouse controversy, none more so than those for Tesco and Parsons Mead. I consulted residents over both, listened to all the arguments and fought hard for the village. Sadly the majority on the planning committee supported the development currently underway at Parsons Mead (I am currently battling to get various things the developer is doing to comply), but my motion to refuse to consent for Tesco was approved by a thin majority. We now face the planning appeal. I will keep working hard to try to ensure that any development is suitable for Ashtead, not simply a ‘standard’ block with traffic chaos! I will also be very firm in protecting our car park.
I know that the Ashtead Independent Party are trying to unseat me. Please do not risk that – don’t let the Lib Dems run the council by default. The only way to ensure they do not, and to keep our car park local – is to vote Conservative. Please contact me if you have any questions or can help me in my campaign.
I ask that you vote for me, and I pledge to work my very best for Ashtead as my record has proven. Thank you.
